Socorro on Solmar V Liveaboard

Dive Socorro Islands, the "Mexican Galapagos" on Solmar V Liveaboard

Come scuba dive the Revillagigedos Archipelago, more commonly known as the Socorro Islands, with the most experienced liveaboard operator in the region, the MV Solmar V. The Solmar V trips to the Socorro Islands are scheduled November - June because these months are best for favorable weather conditions and to encounter the large pelagics that roam this area.  Specifically from mid January through mid April the Socorro Islands are home to a large population of humpback whales that come here to breed and calve.  Whale sharks are a special treat at the islands; they are in the area during November/December and again in late April/May/June.  The giant Pacific manta, pods of friendly bottlenose dolphin, extremely large tuna (the world record yellowfin is from these waters), wahoo and thick schools of jacks are all encountered underwater on a regular basis throughout the entire season.  Add to the mix visiting hammerhead cleaning stations plus sometimes encountering up to seven species of sharks on a single dive and you have the opportunity to experience some of the best big animal diving in the world!

Revillagigedos Archipelago also called Socorro Islands

The Revillagigedos Archipelago, more commonly called the Socorro Islands, is located in the eastern Pacific Ocean approximately 250 miles south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico – at the tip of the Baja peninsula.  These islands are wild, remote and unpredictable and have been called the Mexican Galapagos because of the big animal encounters they provide such as up close and personal encounters with the giant Pacific manta ray, which can grow to 22 feet from wingtip to wingtip.  The 4 islands that make up the volcanic Revillagigedos Archipelago are Clarion, San Benedicto, Socorro Island and Roca Partida.  The last three islands are the destination of this scuba diving adventure and a liveaboard is the only way to dive the islands as there are no day boats or resorts.

Access is by way of the international airport at San Jose Del Cabo - airline code SJD - where shuttle service is readily available to the seaside community of Cabo San Lucas  (approximately a 40 minute drive from the airport).  It is recommended to fly in one day early before your trip.  We can include in your dive travel package hotel accommodations along with airport transfers.  After boarding the boat you can expect a 22 - 24 hour ocean crossing to these islands but the wait is well worth it!

Diving Socorro Islands

Initially gaining worldwide fame for the unbelievably close and intimate giant manta rays encounters, divers from all over the world are now realizing these islands have a lot more to offer. Declared a protected biosphere by the Mexican Government in 1993, the waters surrounding these islands are home to seven different species of sharks. In a time when shark populations are dwindling everywhere, a concerted effort by the dive operators at these islands has paid off. Encounters with silvertips, galapagos, schooling hammerheads and hundreds of silky sharks are not unusual.

Manta Sanctuary in Socorro Islands

The Solmar V has been interacting with the mantas since 1992 and, as a result of having worked with several manta researchers over the years, there are extensive I.D.'s on most of them and the divemasters have special relationships with many of them.  The Solmar V has a strict policy of not chasing or riding the mantas and interaction with them is initiated by the mantas themselves.  The Solmar V believes that the continued willingness of the mantas to interact with divers is due to the respect shown for them over the years.  San Benedicto is one of the best locations in the world to experience and photograph these gentle giants.  The feeling of a wild animal this large deliberately interacting with you is something you will never forget.

As of late, select live-aboards have been offering high energy baitball “jumping” during their trips. The adrenaline rush of jumping into the water amidst thousands of schooling baitfish to watch sharks, dolphins, sailfish and marlin take their turns partaking in the ocean banquet cannot be described! The name of the game here is BIG ANIMAL ENCOUNTERS! Throw in the huge schools of jacks, yellowfin tuna and chance encounters with pilot whales and false orcas and this is a very amazing dive destination not to be missed!
