Banda Sea and Alor Strait are blessed with some of the finest diving in Indonesia. Politically the islands that outline Alor and Solor archipelagos and divided by Alor Strait belong to Nusa Tenggara region, physically instead are part of the Banda Sea Plate, and are being formally known as part of the Lesser Sunda Islands. Alor Strait and Banda Islands are then, a long chain of islands and reefs, actually an entire region ranging from Timor to West Papua. Remote and sparsely populated, most of these islands are remained largely isolated from the rest of Indonesia and the world. The diving trip proposed departs from the Kalabahi Bay and arrives to Ambon Bay, including a wide range of geological landscapes and formations of Indonesia: volcanic islands and limestone pinnacles developed from ancient coral reefs, a rare combination of sea environments that form the arc of islands between Lesser Sunda Islands and Banda Sea. Because these islands are not only remote, but most of all, too far of shore, they are exposed to waves and vagues, being accessible to diving only during calm inter-monsoon periods. Here scuba divers are scarse and many sites are still waiting to be overdrafts. Visibility is generally good to excellent, and the variety of dives is important: large reefs lost in the sea on an island arc with the inside presence of pelagic -including hammerheads in autumn-, steep walls covered with black corals teeming jacks and napoleons, tunas, groupers, barracudas and many other pelagic species, as well as excellent macro: rhinopias and other photogenic monsters.

Diving Banda Sea from Alor Strait to Banda Islands

This cruise goes from the Kalabahi Bay in Alor Island to Ambon Bay in Maluku. You will find few muck dives and macro in Alor Strait and in Sunda islands. Most of the dives will be done on drop off, with beautiful fixed fauna on the walls and possibility of see big and numerous schools of fish in. Macro is well represented on the whole cruise trip, with lots of schools of fish and pelagic.

Banda Sea Diving Environment

In Banda Sea you will re-discover the meaning of clear waters. Wall diving plentiful of beautiful fauna overhanging, black corals and huge sponges, schools of surgeon fishes, trevallies, barracudas, many schools of fish (platax, horse-eye jackfishes, sweet lips), eagle ray, reef sharks and occasionally moon fish. We chose the Banda Islands as a strong point of this unique cruise for the rewards that every new exploration in the area gave us, in fact we can affirm that Banda Islands offers some of the best diving in Indonesian seas. Attractions include gin-clear waters, patch reefs and coral bommies, spectacular wall dives on impossible drop-offs. We will dive in very little visited places, usually rich in pelagic, and maybe we will find the unexpected: hammerhead sharks in...

Visibility

Banda Sea are depth-gin-clear waters, where visibility often reach 30-50 meters.

Water Temperature

The temperature all year around is between 28-29 ̊C.  A 3 mm long wetsuit is enough. Hoods are recommended for this diving trip.

Currents

Some dives are carried out offshore reefs. On this itinerary we expect slow to medium currents. The guides will always check the current before each immersion and inform the divers. However, as we will also probably perform some exploratory dives, a solid dive experience is recommended for this cruise. A reef hook is recommended.

Diving Organization

Due to the large number of dives and the remoteness of the location, we urge divers to stay within the safety curve, to comply with a maximum depth of 35 meters, and to systematically perform a safety stop. Depending on the guests dive experience, aspirations (photography, macro, etc), and eventual use  of nitrox (free for certified divers), the cruise director will arrange the diving groups. These groups are made up of four divers and a dive guide. The dive guides are rotating on a daily basis. Each diver is given a dive tank (DIN & INT available, no need for adapters) and a single location for the duration of the cruise. A briefing will be conducted by the director of cruises or one of the guides before each dive. It will provide guidance on the site topography, depths, currents and potential hazards, as well as on marine life and the species represented. The divers should always carry a marker buoy. The staff carries your tank between the liveaboard and the dinghies and back. to the dinghies, tanks are disposed in slots and the guide will help you to gear just before to roll back for the dive. Identification books of flora and local fauna are available on board, and the dive guides or the skipper will always help you to identify the strange animal you just saw underwater.

Respect of Nature Guidelines

We will request the participants to fill up on board a statement of fitness for the dive activities. We will ask you to carefully respect the fauna and flora: have adequate  buoyancy to avoid touching the substrate or break any corals; do not touch the animals, do not collect anything; do not to harass wildlife to photography and moderate the number of flashes you impose on them. The use of gloves is not allowed.

Navigation & Itinerary

The itinerary varies slightly between each cruise depending on weather conditions, currents, visibility and diving.

Weather

The weather is generally dry and sunny with a refreshing breeze. The sea is flat within the strait, can be more choppy and welly in the southern part.
